Meat Source by Elizabeth Kay

Post by Elizabeth Kay

Last year, I started buying my beef from some ranches that I felt fed their cattle the way I wanted, and I liked knowing my food was fresher - I also appreciated the challenge of utilizing a cow better, rather than being a type of person that uses only a few select cuts. Anyways, I enjoyed my experience so much, but have had a challenge of finding a similar avenue for chicken. Plus, I don't have a big enough freezer yet. :) But, because of this, I've always just bought organic chicken -- WAY expensive, but I just tried to figure out how to cheapen everything else to make this work. But, I just came across this neat business - it's kind of like what we do, but it's with meat! They offer one special per month, and they have locations all over, including Las Vegas, and all over Utah! The only catch is, you buy in bulk, just like our orders. So, I decided to sign on and see what kinds of things I come across. This month is bacon - it sounds delicious, but I KNOW I won't use that much bacon, so I'm trying to see if any of my family members are interested. I thought I'd pass this interesting idea on, in case some of you were interested in the same thing. Sounds interesting, we'll see. I've heard that they have great high quality stuff, but we'll see. It's on my list to try it! :) If you are interested, click on this link (or cut and paste), and it will take you to it. When you go to it, if they ask for a referral, will you put in my code? It's: self-reliant network. Please don't feel pressured to go sign up, i know this isn't everyone's type of thing, it was just a thought.

Also, if you are interested in beef/meat orders, let me know - there are a few people in the valley that coordinate orders for bulk beef, and I'll forward you the info! :)

Raw Honey & Pear Orders by Elizabeth Kay

First, we are rounding up the raw honey order, so if you are wanting any, get a hold of me asap - money is due by Friday. Honey will be delivered either this weekend or next, depending on Honeyman's schedule, weather, etc. So, I'll keep you posted as to when I get it. I can almost taste it... :)

For pears, we didn't hit our mark as far as orders go, but we spoke with the farmer and are going ahead with an order. These pears are Bartlett(the green ones), they are from Utah, and they come in a half-bushel (around 27 pounds). Each box is $20. We are taking orders/payments until next Monday, and are planning on picking them up next weekend, again, depending on the farmer. If you are opening this order to your ward, feel free to give them my email address, number, etc. I know this is short notice, but just let me know if you need a little more time, and I'll see what I can do. I have always canned my pears, but I heard from someone in the network that pear jam is delicious. I just might try it this year. :) Oh, and one last thing - because the farmer was still willing to work with us even though we didn't hit the order number he needed, let's try to spread the word as much as we can so hopefully, we get the number anyway. :) That would be a nice surprise for him...

Hope you all are enjoying your harvest season as much as I am!! I'll be all pooped out by the end of it all. But, my pantry will be full... :)

Beets & Carrots (Food Sourcing)

My name is Pat Fairbairn. I live in Las Vegas and Kingman. I was buying some canning jars at the store in Las Vegas this weekend and a Master food processor identified herself to me. I did some research and came up with your website and email. In Arizona I am working with a grower. We are cleaning out the fields for the next planting. We have a considerable quantity of beets and carrots. I was wondering if your group would be interested in purchasing some of these. We have been selling to small markets in Las Vegas and Mohave Valley. We are not certified organic because we have not applied and paid for the certs. We may this next year as we are expanding from 6 acres to 21 acres.

If you are interested you can contact me at 928-757 v-0516. We are going to pull them up by this Friday. I'm very interested in your group. I've been making pickles for the past 5 weeks trying to use up some of the produce we have been hauling in. I hope I have time to take you course when available.

Sincerely,
Pat F.
